How NOT to sell
In this humorous video, actor Robert De Niro reminds of the common mistakes that can be made in the sales process. While it’s exciting to make a sale, land a new customer and “do the transaction”, our impatience can be counterproductive to our desired goal.
Watch this short and entertaining video and see if you can identify the common mistakes made in selling. Here’s a few that I noticed:
- using inappropriate humor
- using foul language or talking like a “sailor” (or gangster, in this example)
- insulting the customer’s buying strategy
- pushing too hard – forcing the close
- not reading the customer’s body language
- not controlling your own body language
- raising the volume of your voice
- grabbing things you shouldn’t

Dear Kathy,
Thank you for your fascinating presentation last Friday, with Execunet. I also enjoy your website, and I’ve just Tweeted the link to your “How Not to Sell” video and your blog. Kind regards, David
lol a handful of of the responses many people put up make me laugh, over and over i wonder if they even read the information and content before leaving your 2 cents or if perhaps they pretty much read over the subject of the post and post the very first thing that drifts into their minds. in any event, it’s pleasing to browse intelligent commentary once in a while instead of the identical, traditional post vomit which i generally observe on the internet
Dear Poker Chips – glad that you enjoyed the video and editorial comments on How Not To Sell. Don’t you just love Robert DeNiro? Can you imagine actually experiencing that kind of poor sales approach when buying a car or anything else for that matter? Sadly, this kind of inappropriate sales approach is routinely experienced by women and people of color. I’ve been studying the subject of How to Sell to Women recently and find that the trust building process is differently than selling to men. Do you have any experience or thoughts on this matter?
